I figured this out about a year ago and never wrote it up because I honestly didn't think anyone else needed it. I realized I needed a way to back up their comments so I could use their feedback regardless of Wattpad’s server status. Meanwhile, my friendly readers were pointing out issues like the quacking ground. In the middle of my test run, Wattpad experienced multiple outages.

Now, if you look up control freak in the dictionary, you'll find my picture. Making an unedited beta book public wasn’t an easy decision, but I felt like this was the right choice before I poured more time and resources into this monster. When questions arose about my book's unique magic system and possibly marketing it as new adult, I began looking for fantasy-loving beta readers in the target demographic. Since I’m not pursuing traditional publication for First Apprentice nor am I interested in the Kindle Unlimited program, the first publication rights were less valuable to me. A text editor, Word, Libre Office, Google Docs.Choose one or two-preferably with both cloud and local storage so you can work on the go-and take back control of your writing process. What if I told you that you could migrate a 90,000 word 70 chapter novel in only a few hours? The end result lets you pick your poison. If thinking about spending days, possibly weeks, of your precious writing time copying and pasting all those chapters has you reaching for the chocolate, I feel your pain. There isn’t an export this chapter button, let alone one for exporting the entire book. You’ve got ten WIPs and three completed stories. But after reading the hundredth "Wattpad deleted my account and I lost all my stories" tear-jerker, I think this bears repeating. Wattpad is not a word processor, cloud drive, backup drive, or text editor. “Wattpad wished me well and hoped this reader had learned their lesson.Special thanks to MayaR-31 for testing this and sharing her thoughts. Wattpad also declined Morgan’s request for the plagiarizer’s identity. I had honestly believed a reader/fan was promoting my work on the site, until I noticed she was literally taking credit as the author of the book.”Īfter Morgan and her friends confronted the pirate, whose handle was GraceRules, directly, the post was removed. “Initially, I was unsure how Wattpad worked, or what it was. “This was definitely an eye-opening experience for me,” Morgan told PW. In that case, the plagiarizer used an earlier cover and simply removed Morgan’s name.

Morgan recently blogged about her experience with Ancient Guardians, the first book in her series of the same name. Wilder isn’t the only author who has had to rely on the kindness of readers to delete an illegal post, either. “We delete offending accounts in keeping with our zero-tolerance policy,” said Jordan Fischler of Allison+Partners, a public relations firm that represents Wattpad. Nor does Wattpad do anything to point readers back to the real author so that they can benefit from a potentially new fan base.

“That’s unfortunate, as it does not stop this person from doing it again to some other unsuspecting author,” Nelson said. Plagiarizers on sites like Wattpad often commit their crimes to develop a following, so that they can rely on an established audience to purchase their own paid work.Īlthough Wattpad deletes offending accounts, it protects the privacy of the plagiarizer and will not release that information without a court order. But was not successful in obtaining the identity of AmyLeigh153. Wilder’s agent, Kristin Nelson of Nelson Literary Agency, also stepped in to get the pirated material deleted. It took another 18 hours, from when Wilder initially contacted Wattpad, for the site to remove the work. It was a reader who ultimately brought Amyleigh153's work to Wilder’s attention. Because Wattpad pirates are now changing basic, but key, elements of the original work, they have become an even more worrisome issue for authors on the website.

The title was also posted by a different user: Amyleigh153. The plagiarizer gave the book a new name, My Dominant Alpha, along with new cover art. Even though Wilder pays two companies to search for illegal postings-one found close to 32,000 of them-it’s unlikely that any company could have found Wilder's pirated work on Wattpad.
